The Polar Express Storytime at Barnes & Noble

December 7th, 2010

As I started looking for topics to blog on, I thought to myself, do we really need another event to add to our schedules this month?!  But, it’s on my to-do list, so I started the search.  I came across this on the Barnes & Noble website:

The Polar Express Storytime with Hank Sauer
Special Event, Children’s Event
Children of all ages are invited to our Polar Express Storytime on Friday, December 10 at 7:00 pm. Community favorite Hank Sauer will be reading this beloved holiday story. Cookies and chocolate milk for the little ones. Join us!

What a great idea!  The Polar Express is one of our family favorites.  I think getting together and listening to the Polar Express while enjoying cookies and chocolate milk is a fantastic way to spend an evening.  Then at home you can imagine with the kids that the Polar Express is waiting outside your house to take you on an adventure!  Who doesn’t love listening to the young ones describe it from their view?  If you need more information, be sure to click here to check it out.

The UnTapped Blues Festival | Tri-Cities, Washington

April 15th, 2009

“Hot Blues, Cold Brews” at this year’s 13th Annual Untapped Blues Festival. It’s coming Saturday, May 9th, from noon to eleven p.m. Tickets available April 4th. Every year Kennewick hosts this fun and great-tasting festival full of good music and beer. Award winning artists from all over come to play for us. This year we have an excellent line-up. Performing this year are the Latin influenced Delgado Brothers. Magic Slim and the Teardrops will be performing Chicago-style blues. Fan favorite Junkyard Jane will be here as well. We’ll also have the Fat Tones, Miriam’s Well, Wired! Rockabilly Blues Band, the Vaughn Jensen Band, and Roberson, Breese, and Flores. The music is sure to be awesome!

You can purchase your tickets here http://www.untappedblues.com/ut_tickets.html for just $25. The ticket includes a tasting glass (for the first 3,000 attendees) 11 hours of great music, access to 24 of the USA’s best microbreweries, 6 of the region’s premium wineries, and many more various vendors, such as cigars, food, jewelry, and so forth. That’s a lot for just $25! You can also get your tickets at various outlets such as Ranch and Home, Atomic Ale, Jackson’s, and Ice Harbor Brewery. It’s $30 at the gate. Food and non-alcoholic drinks are purchased with cash. All alcohol drinks are purchased with “scrip tickets” that you buy when you get to the event. Don’t forget, you have to be 21 or older and have valid ID to attend. Sorry kiddos!

Hopefully if you drink you won’t drive home after the event. You should carpool and have a designated driver, but there is always the route 49 bus that goes to the fairgrounds, and the Tri-City Taxi. If you feel that home is just a bit farther than you feel like travelling, Clover Island Inn is offering a special package that includes a shuttle to and from the event, $179 for a double room for a two-night stay that includes two tickets to the event, free admission to the Pre-Festival Kick-Off Party, and a complimentary breakfast. That’s what I call a deal! If you decide to book, you have to mention it’s for the Untapped Blues Festival to get the special rates.

As always, the festival will be held at the Benton County Fairgrounds. So bring your lawn chair, blanket, and cash, and get ready to party!

2009 Benton County Fair and Rodeo Entertainment Lineup Released

April 10th, 2009

Even though this year’s fair is still just under five months away, we’re already looking forward to it. You’ll never believe who they managed to get to come to the Tri-Cities to play for us…Clint Black and The Beach Boys! I feel like we haven’t had a big act in a while. Not only are those two going to be playing, but America, Night Ranger, and Bucky Covington will be there as well.

Tickets go on sale from 8:00 a.m. to noon on April 25th. Bring a sleeping bag! Most people will arrive the morning of the 24th and camp out to get the best seats possible. Tickets will be available online at www.bffairrodeo.com on Monday the 27th.

Clint Black will start us off on the first day of the Fair, Tuesday, August 25th. We’ll get to hear songs from his 2005 album “Drinkin’ Songs and Other Logic” as well as his hit single “Long Cool Woman.”

The Beach Boys will be performing Wednesday, August 26th. Although it’s not been said what will be played, I’m sure everyone will enjoy their fun tunes all the same.

America, a folk rock group, will play Thursday, August 27th. Night Ranger, an 80′s hard rock group, will play Friday, August 28th. Last but not least, Bucky Covington, one of the “American Idol” top eight from the fifth season, will perform Saturday, August 29th.

So grab a sleeping bag, grab an ice chest, and camp out to get your tickets! There sure to sell out quick.

LIGO Public Tours | Tri-Cities, Washington

April 8th, 2009

It’s amazing how long you can live in the Tri-Cities and still not know what we have to offer. Besides the obvious (the three rivers, the many wineries, the golf courses) we have something that is truly unique: we have LIGO!

LIGO is short for Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, and is an instrument for sensing the presence of matter, whether shining or dark, in the distant reaches of the cosmos. LIGO does this by detecting the gravitational waves — ripples in the force of gravity — created by violent events such as the collisions of stars and the vibrations of black holes.

I’ll direct you to their amazing website: http://www.ligo-wa.caltech.edu/ligo_overview.html

LIGO offers monthly public tours where you receive a very informative and fascinating lecture that doesn’t bore and keeps you on the edge of your seat. This huge machine can detect ripples in the time-space continuum 70 million light years away! Crazy! You will also be allowed to see this machine, as well as go outside to view the heavens through their many telescopes. When I went, it was so dark we were able to see where our galaxy ended…I was enthralled. You could actually see the arms of our spiral galaxy extending out towards the far reaches of space. We were also able to observe many other galaxies and constellations, and even got to see our space station go by! The beauty of the universe will amaze you and leave you wanting to know (and see) more.

Check out their website for all their public drip-in tour dates. You should go!

Irish Games

March 17th, 2009

If you’ve lived in the Tri-Cities long enough, you’ve most likely been to the St. Patrick’s Day Irish Games. If not, you’re missing out! Every year is jam-packed full of activities to do, booths to explore, and music to hear. The kidzone area alone is nearly 40,000 square feet. That’s a lot of area for your munchkins to run around and have fun in! A bracelet is required for the children’s area, but it’s only $20, well worth it when they go home with a smile on their face. If you have even smaller children, there are plenty of other activities such as face painting, carnival games, and bounce houses. We can’t forget the awesome music that accompanies this event! The main band this year is “Hollywood Stones” who is a Rolling Stones Cover Band. You’re bound to be rocking and rolling all night long! Of course, there will be tons of good food from many different vendors. There are also so many booths with so many cool things, you will be sure to leave with your wallet a little lighter! The Dubliner Pub is where you’ll want to go dressed up in your Irish Games attire. Go to the Irish Games at TRAC! March 20 4pm-1am, and March 21 10am-1am. It’s only $3 a person, and kids 6 and under are free! For more information visit www.irishgames.org.
