The smallest city in the TriCities, Richland has a population near 45,000. Although originally a small farming community, Richland is now firmly grounded in science and technology. It is home to the DOE’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and a four-year university, Washington State University-TriCities. Richland is noted for excellence in technology, medicine, education and recreation with numerous parks along the Columbia River. The city boasts the Hanford Reach, the last free-flowing stretch of the Columbia River in the United States which was designated as a National Monument by President Clinton.
